Blocks in Timebook

In Timebook, Blocks are customizable elements that help you manage and present the content of your Pages. There are several types of Blocks, each serving a different purpose.

You can use Blocks to format text, as you would in other popular text editors. But you can also add visual aids to your Pages using different media or reference content from external sources. And you can also use Widgets, which are Timebook-specific Blocks that help you present .

Add & edit Blocks

When you open an empty Page, you can start typing immediately; this creates a new text Block at the top of the Page. But you can also add different types of Blocks.

To add a Block:

  1. Press the [+] button inside the left margin of the Page.

  2. Select the type of Block you want to add from the list.

  3. The selected Block becomes a new section on your Page, with its own "handle" that you can use to edit the Block later.

NOTE: You can also type "/" to see the complete list of Block types. If you continue typing, you will see only the Block types whose names match your input.

As for images (and most types of files in general), you can add them to a Page from your device using the drag & drop functionality.

Move Blocks around

Blocks are containers that hold your content. You can fill them with relevant data, such as text, Work Items, files, and more. You can also move the Blocks around to change the structure of your Page.

You can grab the handle of a Block to drag and drop it to a new location. Pressing the handle also allows you to perform some additional actions:

  • [Insert above] lets you add a new Block directly above the one you are currently editing.

  • [Insert below] lets you add a new Block directly below the one you are currently editing.

  • [Duplicate] creates an identical copy of the Block you are currently editing.

  • [Delete] removes the Block from the Page.

You can select multiple Blocks to copy and paste them all at once using standard keyboard shortcuts.

Available Block types

Timebook comes with many Blocks to choose from, so you can manage your content in any way you like. Timebook Blocks can be divided into several main types. See the dedicated sections below to learn more about your options.

Basic Blocks

The basic Blocks are here to make formatting text and numbers easier. The basic Blocks got you covered if you plan to work on documentation, instructions, or any other text-heavy content.

Use the [Text] Block and start typing. You can then select a piece of text inside this Block and use the context menu to change its style. You can make it bold, underline it, and change the color and alignment of the text; all the popular options are here.

NOTE: You can also select a piece of text and use the [Convert to Work Item] option. Do it to create a single Work Item with the selected text used as its name or description.

Below is a list of all available Basic Blocks:

You can apply different [Heading] levels to make your content easier to follow. Three options are available, each with a different font size.

Use lists to emphasize details. Consider a [Bulleted list] when writing up a collection of items, a [Numbered list] when explaining a procedure, or a [Checklist] when managing your to-dos.

NOTE: You can select a list (or a part of it) and use the [Convert to Work Item] option. Do it to create several Work Items, each representing one item on the list.

You can use the [Divider] Block to separate two sections with a thin line.

The [Quote] Block is perfect for presenting inspirational sentences to others.

The [Code] Block creates a snippet where you can put a small, reusable piece of code that others can easily copy into another website or app.

Use [Table] for more structured content that is easiest to represent with columns and rows. This Block has buttons for inserting and deleting sections to help trim or expand your table.

NOTE: If you paste comma-separated values directly onto a Page, Timebook will automatically create a table to present your data.

Use [Callout] as a visual element to draw attention to specific information. The options available in the [Meatballs] menu of a Callout Block allow you to change its background color and icon.

The [Toggle] Block creates an expandable section that allows you to show or hide selected content. Each Toggle has its own heading that you can rename. Pressing on the heading opens or hides the attached content.

Inline Blocks

The advantage of Inline Blocks is that they don't require a dedicated section on a Page. You can insert them in the middle of an existing paragraph and surround them with text.

Most Inline Blocks are links that reference content from Timebook or external sources.

Below is a list of all available Media Blocks:

The [Date] Block is a simple tool for creating time stamps. Adding it to the Page creates a small callout showing the current date and time. Press the Block to access the calendar picker and change the date and time. You can select past or future dates.

When adding the [Link] Block to a Page, specify the text to be displayed and paste the actual link to an external source. You can show the link as a simple string of text or turn it into a bookmark for a better visual experience.

[File link] Block lets you add a file (other than image, audio, or video) to a Page. You can upload from various sources, including Timebook files, Google Drive, or your device.

[Wiki link] and [Document link] allow you to reference another Page from one of your Timebook Documents or Wikis.

This Block creates a small snippet of the selected Page with its name and icon. You can use it to jump to the Page quickly.

You can use [Event link] or [Work Item link] to create a reference to one of your or Work Items.

Select one of these options and use the search to find the object you want to reference. We will then create a small snippet on the Page. Use it to quickly jump to the referenced item.

The [List link], [Sprint link], [Project link], and [Roadmap link] Blocks allow you to reference Timebook's work management tools and their data.

Select one of these options and use the search to find the object you want to reference. We will then present a special widget showing the selected tool and the data it holds.

For more information on these Timebook's work management features, see List Sprint Release and Roadmap

Media

Timebook Media Blocks will make your Pages easier on the eye and quicker to navigate. You can boost Pages with relevant images or support your content with links to external sources. You can also add quick reference links to other Pages in Timebook.

Below is a list of all available Media Blocks:

Use the [Image] Block to upload graphics from one of the available sources. You can display an image from one of your [Timebook] files, upload an image from [Google Drive] or [Your device], or [Link] an image from the web using a URL address.

There are Blocks for adding [Audio] and [Video] files to your Timebook Pages. Again, you can use upload from one of the sources described above. These Blocks come with a volume control that you can also use to mute the sound.

Use the dedicated [PDF] Block to upload documents of this type. Timebook lets you preview uploaded PDF files on Pages instead of adding them as simple attachments.

Embeds

Use Embed Blocks to display content from external sources. Embeds allow you to enhance your work data with documents, videos, charts, and sheets from other apps. Timebook supports embeds from these sources:

To add an Embed Block to your Page:

  1. Press the [+] button inside the left margin of a Page.

  2. Select the type of Embed Block you want to add.

  3. Paste the link (URL address) to the external source.

  4. Press [Embed] to confirm.

NOTE: If you select an Embed Block type but won't provide a URL address, we will create a placeholder you can use to add the URL later.

AI-powered Blocks

In Timebook, you can support your Pages with AI-generated content. To do so, select the [Write with AI] Block or type "." when starting a new text Block.

You can then write a prompt telling our AI Assistant precisely what you need. After the content is generated, you can confirm that you want to keep it, ask the Assistant to modify it, or discard the generated text.

NOTE: The scope of AI-related features may be limited by your Workplace's pricing plan.
